National Train Your Dog Month Training Tip #10: Beat the Boredom! Both mental and physical exercises are extremely important for dogs. Oftentimes the bad behaviors we want to avoid (such as barking, chewing and digging) are direct results of boredom and lack of stimulation.
Having access to a large yard isn't enough - dogs left to themselves can get bored very quickly and can even become really depressed. Remember, dogs are pack animals they want and need interaction with you and others! Some simple ways to keep your pup happy and healthy are:
Physical exercise
- Go for a walk
- Visit the dog park (as long as your pup is friendly with others)
- Play a game of tug
- Play fetch
Momo loves to visit the dog park and roll around with the "big guys."
Mental exercise
- Teach new tricks or commands
- Play "Hide and Seek" (hide yummy treats around the house/yard and tell him to find them!)
- Intelligence Toys
- Agility practice (this is great for physical and mental stimulation!)
The P.L.A.Y. Tunnel is great for exercise and mental stimulation!
Those are just a few of our favorite exercises, what do your dogs love?
