How to Keep Your Dogs & Cats Free of Ticks & Fleas

Ticks and fleas are pests that aren’t just annoying, they can be dangerous, too. Ticks especially can carry blood-borne illnesses. Both easily burrow into your pet’s fur. Remember to stay vigilant and make sure that it’s just you and your pet spending time together, not any uninvited guests! Here is what you need to know.

Check Them Regularly

Have a tick-check every time you and your pet return home after playing outside. You’ll remember to do it if it’s a routine. There are several key areas to examine. These include around the tail, under the collar, and under the front legs. Don’t neglect checking between the toes because small pests can easily hide there, too. This process doesn’t have to be unpleasant. However, if your pet is fidgety and uncomfortable, reward them for their patience.

Keep Your Pet Away from Tick Habitats

Ticks and fleas are an unpleasant reality, especially if you live near a heavily forested area, or have a garden. They prefer to live in tall grasses and bushes. These pests also flourish when it’s humid. It’s a good idea to keep your pets indoors as much as possible during the spring and fall for this reason. Try to ensure that your dog stays on the trail when you’re hiking. If he’s too enthusiastic and goes bounding off, take extra care to examine him for ticks afterwards.

Use Special Products

Consider investing in pest-eliminating shampoos and bath products. They are not as effective as spot treatments, but can become an extra preventative step by catching any pests you’ve missed. Apply the product at least once a week. Work the product thoroughly into your pet’s fur to ensure coverage. Other options include a special collar designed to kill pests. They work by releasing gases that are dangerous to ticks and fleas but harmless to pets and humans. These gases are then dispensed naturally throughout your pet’s fur.

Clean Your Home

Pests can, of course, thrive indoors as much as out. They are drawn to materials reminiscent of their woodland home. Thicker fabrics are a particular risk area. Vacuum often to minimize this threat. Diatomaceous Earth is an ingredient you can sprinkle on carpets as another barrier. It’s a non-poisonous pesticide. Baking soda is another house-cleaning favorite that works similarly.

If you’re still concerned, talk to a local pest control company like Fowler Pest Control. These services can cover more ground than you’d be able to on your own.
